Laval Liberal MNAs speak out on values charter<\/i><\/b>

There\u2019s a fine line between protecting rights and imposing a monoculture in Quebec, Francine Chabonneau told The Suburban<\/i> in an interview. <\/p>\n

The Mille \u00celes MNA highlighted the Quebec Liberal Party\u2019s stance on the Parti qu\u00e9b\u00e9cois<\/i> government\u2019s proposed values charter. Authored by fellow Laval Liberal caucus member Gilles Ouimet, who represents Fabre riding, the policy would preclude provincial civil servants from covering their faces and from wearing full-body covering women\u2019s attire. <\/p>\n

Quebec Liberals are also prepared to preserve \u201cQuebec\u2019s religious patrimony\u201d including the Roman Catholic crucifix that hangs on the wall of the Quebec legislature. <\/p>\n

\u201cA burqa says something more than about simply religion,\u201d Charbonneau said, arguing that equality between men and women takes precedence. She added that the Quebec Liberal policy would not apply to parochial schools. <\/p>\n

The Quebec Liberals also took a firm stance against hate speech, forced marriage, polygamy and physical abuse.<\/p>\n

Quebec should not ban like Iran <\/b><\/p>\n

Charbonneau then criticized the values charter for its overzealous coerciveness. <\/p>\n

\u201cMy constituents say to me, \u2018Madame, if I go to Iran, they will force me to dress the way that they do. That\u2019s horrible,\u2019\u201d she recounted. \u201cI reply, \u2018You know what, that\u2019s what you are doing now. Is that what we want to be?\u2019 That\u2019s not the Quebec that we should aspire to.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cYou cannot have a community where everyone is the same,\u201d she asserted. \u201cUniformity is not a society. When I visit Paris, New York and London, I don\u2019t just see blond hair and blue eyes.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cQuebec has always been a place that attracts people,\u201d she added. \u201cI see that in the diversity that I witness here every day.\u201d <\/p>\n

Promising pan-Quebec rainbow <\/b><\/p>\n

\u201cLaval reflects the potential for any region in Quebec,\u201d Charbonneau enthused. \u201cWhen I stand in line at Tim Horton\u2019s, I don\u2019t just see people who look like me. That\u2019s the best thing that could happen in Quebec. When I visit Chomedey, Fabre, Vimont and where I reside in Ste. Rose, I meet English people, Italian people and people from many other communities.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s encouraging [to see how these] people are establishing themselves throughout Laval. Soon, I think, they will venture further to places like Trois Rivi\u00e8res and Lac St. Jean,\u201d she predicted. <\/p>\n

The reality is that Quebec needs workers, Charbonneau added. <\/p>\n

\u201cThe Tremblays, Gagnons and Charbonneaus of this world don\u2019t have 12-children families any longer,\u201d she observed. \u201cThey have one child or sometimes none and we need people if we are to ensure that our society continues to function. We need the rest of the world, to survive.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cLaval represents a melding of communities that show the diversity that we have and the welcome that they have found in Quebec,\u201d Charbonneau concluded. \u201cUltimately it\u2019s a place you can come to work, to have a family and to be happy.\u201d <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
