It is difficult to find polite language to describe how upsetting it was to learn of the Montreal Agglomeration Council’s contempt for, and ignorance of, its boroughs by suggesting that Pointe Claire is \u201ctoo far\u201d to hold the FINA World Aquatics Championship.<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nAs boroughs, we pay constantly rising, inflated tax bills that overwhelmingly benefit Montreal, including taxes that, in principle, are to support parks and recreation throughout the island.<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nThe logic is that we all ought to pay for facilities that all of us use. If that’s true, how can Montreal’s agglomeration councilors justify taxing West Islanders for Mount Royal Park and the Old Port, for example, which we must travel downtown to enjoy, while claiming that the same journey is excessive for the rest of Montreal to come here? Is the Montreal Agglomeration Council unaware that it is the same distance to and from the city?<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nWake up Montreal: You can\u2019t justify taking our money (18.7% of the total expense for this event) and then give us the brush-off when it comes to holding the event in our community, in a newly built, state-of-the-art facility at that.<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nHow can you condone wasting millions more on a temporary facility? No problem. You’ll get West Islanders to help pay for it. It was a profligate decision, squandering our hard-earned tax dollars.<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nYour condescension and disrespect toward West Islanders has ripped away your last fa\u00e7ade of fairness. Next thing you know, they’ll be making us pay to build a hospital and then tell us that we can’t use it! <\/p>\n
