Laval\u2019s Biotech City announced last week that it has signed an agreement that will let a major international biotech publication\u2014Biotech Finances<\/i>\u2014set up a bureau on-site here.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe expect to be operating by August,\u201d editor-in-chief Jacques-Bernard Taste told The Suburban<\/i> in a telephone interview from Lyon, France. \u201cIt\u2019s a way of bringing together francophone stakeholders in biotech business and finance.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe goal of this partnership is really to open up all of North America, not just Quebec,\u201d enthused Biotech City director Jean-Marc Juteau about Biotech Finances\u2019<\/i> new pied-\u00e0-terre<\/i> in Laval. \u201cWe\u2019re the hub for French biotech business in North America, so this is the best place to do it from and it was an easy fit. In return, Biotech Finances<\/i> will help to heighten our visibility throughout the world.\u201d<\/p>\n

The print version of Biotech Finances<\/i> reaches more than 5,000 biotech and meditech stakeholders. Its website www.biotech-finances.com is a repository containing more than 130,000 of information and an audio blog that reaches a worldwide audience of more than 580,000.<\/p>\n

\u201cCurrently, about 85 percent are in France,\u201d Taste explained, \u201cwith many in Belgium. Quebec is just starting up, and the intent is to grow there.\u201d<\/p>\n

He added that the Laval Biotech City bureau will initially employ a single correspondent, but could eventually grow larger.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe market is currently dividing up by language,\u201d Taste said. \u201cThe francophonie offers lots of opportunity\u2014and potentially an advantage. With the demographic explosion in Africa, there is real and concrete potential for French to regain its position as the world\u2019s first language during the coming half-century.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIn biotechnology and pharmaceuticals, English is the main language because science is in English,\u201d Juteau acknowledged. \u201cBut French remains a powerful asset because the language remains pervasive.\u201d<\/p>\n

Juteau plans to visit the Rh\u00f4ne-Alpes region of France this spring, to interest firms in Grenoble and Lyon in investing at Laval\u2019s Biotech City and elsewhere in Quebec. His message though simple, is persuasive.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a great place to set up in North America,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Juteau added that the partnership with Biotech Finances<\/i>\u2014which is based in Lyon\u2014ought to help to forge productive new relationships.<\/p>\n
