Jean Rousselle says that Laval\u2019s ambulance service is broken and he wants Health Minister Dr. R\u00e9jean H\u00e9bert to fix it, without delay. <\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re the third-largest city in Quebec with a population well over 400,000, yet sometimes there are no ambulances anywhere in Laval,\u201d the Vimont MNA told The Suburban<\/i> during an interview at the Cit\u00e9 de la sant\u00e9<\/i> superhospital, Feb. 21. \u201cIt’s a big problem.\u201d <\/p>\n

He wants Dr. H\u00e9bert to ensure that at least two ambulances are stationed in Laval at all times. <\/p>\n

\u201cAll-too-often, Urgences sant\u00e9 <\/i>assigns ambulances elsewhere that are supposed to be serving Laval in order to fill a gap in other cities or to shuttle patients,\u201d Rousselle explained. <\/p>\n

To illustrate how badly ambulance service has deteriorated, he recounted a horror story that occurred earlier this month.<\/p>\n

\u201cThree weeks ago, it took 39 minutes for an Urgences sant\u00e9<\/i> ambulance to respond to a call in Ste. Rose,\u201d he said. \u201cThe ambulance that was dispatched had to get there from LaSalle [in southeast Montreal].\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cIt was a Priority 1 call, to boot,\u201d emphasized Rousselle, a former Laval police officer. \u201cThat\u2019s the highest level of medical emergency.\u201d <\/p>\n

According to government service standards, emergency medical responders ought to reach the scene within nine minutes. <\/p>\n

\u201cThe current level of service is inadequate,\u201d he asserted. \u201cI\u2019m worried that, before long, people will die because of the delay.\u201d <\/p>\n

According to fire chief Robert S\u00e9guin, Laval firefighters are trained and equipped to help the injured, while they await an ambulance. <\/p>\n

\u201cEach fire station has at least one defibrillator on a truck,\u201d S\u00e9guin told The Suburban. \u201cFirefighters are trained to use them. In addition (see accompanying report), Laval Police officers have defibrillators in every patrol car.\u201d <\/p>\n

Rousselle acknowledged that Laval police officers and firefighters are serving as a stopgap, \u201cbut it doesn\u2019t replace the experience of a paramedic. They don\u2019t have the same degree of training.\u201d<\/p>\n
