Patients who live outside Montreal but currently go there for medical treatment in are upset that they\u2019re still in the dark about the Parti qu\u00e9b\u00e9cois\u2019<\/i> health care regionalization plans. <\/p>\n

During a news conference last week, Quebec Health Minister R\u00e9jean H\u00e9bert insisted that no one will be forced to seek treatment elsewhere. Mario di Carlo, who represents patients at the McGill University Hospital Centre\u2019s (MUHC) said that still leaves a lot of open-ended questions that would like to know the answers to.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat\u2019s going to happen to the university hospitals?\u201d asked the spokesman for the MUHC Central Users Committee (CUC), during an interview with The Suburban.<\/i> \u201cWill they be obliged to send patients elsewhere?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe bottom line is that is that university hospitals conduct research,\u201d di Carlo explained. \u201cIt remains to be seen how whole system will be affected and whether patients will have a choice\u2014or if someone will be swaying them to do something that they might not necessarily be happy about.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe will be continuing to monitor the situation,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n

For the past four weeks, Montreal\u2019s health care authority has remained hors combat<\/i> while The Suburban<\/i> has repeatedly tried unsuccessfully to get it to spell out details of how it will handle the pending reorganization, expected April 1. <\/p>\n

\u201cSome patients, as is to be expected, are very concerned and even anxious, as they do not know yet where they will have their dialysis treatments,\u201d CUC member Evelyn Seligman told The Suburban<\/i> in an electronic mail message.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo information has been given to us as to how the divestment of patients will be carried out,\u201d said Seligman, who also represents patients on the MUHC\u2019s Dialysis Outpatients Committee. \u201cNo one on either of these committees has received any details about the divestment of the general patient body of the MUHC.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cVery few details have been finalized in the context of the dialysis situation,\u201d Seligman said. \u201cThe situation involving MUHC dialysis patients is in flux. They do not know yet where they will receive treatments. There are no answers yet from the administrations, the [regional health authority] or the Health Ministry.\u201d <\/p>\n

The MUHC patient representatives have taken a dim view how officials have handled the impending transfer. <\/p>\n

\u201cDialysis is a life-sustaining treatment,\u201d she reminded. \u201cMUHC officials have assured us that dialysis patients will continue to have the same excellent care that they have now.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cOur members are extremely displeased that no reply has been given,\u201d she concluded. \u201cIt\u2019s very, very unsettling for patients, for sure,\u201d agreed di Carlo. \u201cThey haven\u2019t really been consulted as to whether this will work and whether it is better for them.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWill it be the best care, or just care?\u201d he asked. <\/p>\n

\u201cPatient-centred care entails ensuring that whatever is done to serve or care for patients serves their desires and needs\u2014rather than what the institution needs,\u201d he told The Suburban in an interview. \u201cRegionalization won\u2019t accomplish that, on the basis of the information that I have.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cWill every health care professional take the same approach to patients, or will some be pushed and not have a choice? We don\u2019t know. It\u2019s very difficult to find out what the framework will be,\u201d he concluded. <\/p>\n

Officials have avoided outlining details since The Suburban<\/i> broke the story last month that the Parti qu\u00e9b\u00e9cois<\/i> government wants Montreal hospitals to offload their patients to the surrounding regions. <\/p>\n

ASSS Montreal declined to schedule an interview with The Suburban<\/i> to discuss how regionalization plan will be implemented, and West Island health care officials have agreed to a meeting with their director-general three times, only to abruptly postpone on each occasion. As the newspaper went to press, they indicated are not prepared to meet The Suburban<\/i> before March 16\u2014long after many observers anticipate that a provincial election might be called.<\/p>\n
