Dr. Joe Schwarcz will speak to senior West Island College\u2019s (WIC) students, March 31, to mark the school\u2019s 40th anniversary. The director of McGill University\u2019s Office for Science & Society is renowned for his informative and entertaining talks on topics that range from the chemistry of love to the science of aging. <\/p>\n

The bestselling author also hosts The Dr. Joe Show<\/i> on CJAD and has appeared many times on The Discovery Channel, CTV, CBC and Global Television. <\/p>\n

The presentation was coordinated by Mr. Al Hilli, science teacher at WIC, who welcomed Dr. Schwarcz to campus eight years ago for a similar presentation. <\/p>\n

\u201cThis will be a great opportunity for students at WIC to experience a lecture by a renowned scientist and science lecturer,\u201d said WIC science teacher Al Hilli. \u201cWho better than Joe Schwarcz to give students a taste of what discover in CEGEP and university science studies?\u201d <\/p>\n

On February 20th, Mr. Al Hilli took WIC\u2019s robotics team to Vanier\u2019s Annual CRC Robotics Competition where competitors build a robot and a kiosk, produce a website and keep a journal. WIC\u2019s team won first place for its website. <\/p>\n

WIC grade 8 and 9 students also recently competed in their annual science fair. The competition was fierce. The projects Entailed grappling with serious, grown-up issues ranging from oil spills to crumbling infrastructure. <\/p>\n

Ethan Warhaft-Graziano and Daniel Gosselin undertook the task of testing bridges to find the best way to keep them standing, while David Bellas found that sawdust was the most efficient way to clean up an oil spill in salt water. <\/p>\n

Other activities that the Dollard des Ormeaux school has planned to celebrate its 40th anniversary include a month art exhibit as well as a student vs. alumni hockey game at the end of March and an \u201call-years\u201d reunion in May.
