The Pointe Claire based company Reliance, which was illegally storing PCBs on its site in the city’s industrial park, is now set to have the site’s soil rehabilitation that will begin this week, according to a communiqu\u00e9 released by the city. <\/p>\n

The company Technorem Inc. has been awarded the contract by the provincial environment ministry following the work completed by Sanexen Environmental Services Inc. that was done in the winter months. The previous contractor, according to the city’s release, “emptied transformers, disposed of containers filled with oily water and contaminated soil, removed liquids from transformers located outdoors and safely disposed of barrels inside the building.”<\/p>\n

The company also disposed of roughly 600 metric tons “of potentially contaminated soil, in order to limit the risk of runoff of contaminated water in the spring,” noted the release. <\/p>\n

“The ministry will regularly monitor the situation during the period of spring snow melt to make sure there is no migration of contaminants on the site,” said Pointe Claire Mayor Morris Trudeau. “The city’s authorities are sparing no effort to ensure that the site does not represent any kind of threat to the population’s health and safety in the future. <\/p>\n

“This is the step that will lead to the removal of all residual contamination on the site,” noted the mayor.<\/p>\n
