The Metro grocery chain has picked Laval\u2019s Ste. B\u00e9atrice Elementary School as one of the five finalists in its Green Apple school program. The program encourages students to adopt healthy eating habits by taking on and completing a project proposed by their school that will make a positive impact on their home, school or community. <\/p>\n

Ethnic diversity inspired the project at the Laval school. Exposing the students to a variety of fruits allowing the children to experience tastes from different countries gives them the ability to select from a wider range of choices when preparing their daily lunches. <\/p>\n

Metro selected Laval schools to receive thirty-five $1,000 grants this year. As in previous years, Metro will invest $1 million by awarding $1,000 grants to elementary and high schools in Quebec.<\/p>\n

Since its inception, the program has created close to 100 gardens of all kinds, set up more than 500 cooking and culinary discovery workshops and put together almost 200 recipe books. All projects must contain an \u201cawareness\u201d component and raise consciousness among the students. <\/p>\n

The project that receives the most votes would win $1,000 for its school as well as a chance to whip up a healthy breakfast together with Metro nutritionists Linda Montpetit and Caroline McCann and serve it their friends during an outdoor picnic at their school. <\/p>\n

The public is invited to vote via Facebook at Metro mon \u00e9picier<\/i> between March 20 and April 2. <\/p>\n
