\u201cWhen I go door-to-door, people want to talk to me about the real issues: the economy, education and health care,\u201d Jean Habel told The Suburban,<\/i> \u201cnot a problem such as a referendum.\u201d <\/p>\n

Habel, who has lived in Laval for 25 years, is running for election as the Liberal\u2019s candidate in Ste. Rose riding. <\/p>\n

\u201cCommuters need better public transit in Ste. Rose, especially a central train station,\u201d Habel said in an interview. \u201cWe also need to preserve the unique charm of Ste. Rose Boulevard.\u201d <\/p>\n

He also wants to see the province provide better support to small businesses in the riding, which are the biggest creators of new jobs. <\/p>\n

\u201cWe need to implement a tax credit that will help family members and employees to take over those businesses, most of whose owners are projected to retire within the next five-to-ten years,\u201d he urged.<\/p>\n

Habel is a financial expert who works for SNC-Lavalin as a stock market analyst. At 26, he already holds two accounting designations, as a professional as well as a management accountant. Before entering the workforce, he completed some of his studies as an exchange student in Denmark. <\/p>\n

Besides his business acumen, he volunteers his time to support meals-on-wheels, as well as a food-bank and goodwill clothing outlet. <\/p>\n

\u201cThere are many seniors in need,\u201d Habel reminded, \u201cplus poverty is an issue in every part of Quebec. That\u2019s why I decided to get involved and made the plunge into provincial politics. It\u2019s important to help those people who are struggling.\u201d<\/p>\n

He thinks his flair for figures will give him an edge in the campaign, in contrast with the Parti qu\u00e9b\u00e9cois\u2019<\/i> star youth candidate, L\u00e9o Bureau-Blouin<\/a>, 22, a first-year law student who is running for reelection in a different riding, Laval des Rapides. <\/p>\n

\u201cMy finance and administration background give me a better understanding of Laval issues,\u201d he contended, \u201cand the quarter-century that I have lived in Laval has acquainted me well with this riding and its people.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cPeople seem enthusiastic to see a young person run in this riding,\u201d he reported, insisting that, if they try, young adults can make a decisive difference. \u201cThat\u2019s the message that I\u2019m conveying to other youth during this election: get involved.\u201d<\/p>\n

Habel added that there is also a lot of resentment in Ste. Rose against the P\u00e9quiste government\u2019s unilateral imposition of new flood zones<\/a> along shorefront properties. <\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a big problem in Ste. Rose and Fabre,\u201d he said. \u201cThe current MNA [Suzanne Proulx] doesn’t take it seriously enough.\u201d <\/p>\n

Residents saw the value of their homes drop instantly by as much as 30 percent, after the province strong-armed Laval into imposing new flood-zone restrictions on homeowners. <\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not just affecting property values here,\u201d Habel concluded. \u201cIt also harms residents\u2019 quality of life.\u201d <\/p>\n

Last week, The Suburban<\/i> reported that voters in Fabre riding are also incensed<\/a> by Parti Qu\u00e9b\u00e9cois pressure to phase in flood zone measures precipitously in Laval.
