\u201cIt\u2019s a very responsible budget,\u201d David de Cotis told The Suburban<\/i> after Finance Minister Carlos Leit\u00e3o tabled the province\u2019s financial roadmap for the coming year. <\/p>\n

\u201cHe is trying to trim $7.2 billion to balance the province\u2019s finances. That remains challenging for the province as well as the city, because there\u2019s not really much in it for the Laval or other Quebec municipalities,\u201d the city\u2019s executive committee vice-chairman said in an interview. <\/p>\n

He nonetheless welcomed the announcement, March 26, that the province will proceed with the extension of Highway 19.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is also a measure that will help Laval homeowners over 65-years-old with their municipal taxes,\u201d de Cotis added. \u201cIf their earnings are less than $50,000 a year, it will help offset increases in their tax bill.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNonetheless, that\u2019s the only thing that we really see for Laval,\u201d de Cotis continued. \u201cThe city is looking forward to renegotiating a new tax agreement for the 2016 budget. There is an expectation that the provincial government will give Laval, Quebec\u2019s third-biggest city, what it requires.\u201d<\/p>\n

\nSWLSB slashed $4.5 million<\/b><\/p>\n

Meantime, Sir Wilfrid Laurier School Board (SWLSB) officials will huddle this week to figure out how to handle the budget reduction, which sliced much deeper than they had expected.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe will be meeting throughout April to discuss what to do,\u201d SWLSB chair Jennifer Maccarone told The Suburban.<\/i> \u201cWe were expecting new cuts but not to the tune of $4.5 million. It\u2019s incredibly damaging.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe government says that its work to balance the budget places youth at the heart of Quebec\u2019s priorities,\u201d Maccarone said. \u201cIt certainly doesn\u2019t feel that way. These cutbacks will have a dire effect upon students. In particular, we\u2019re worried about the impact for our most at-risk population, which includes special needs children.\u201d<\/p>\n

Maccarone\u2019s family now risks being directly affected by the cutbacks, since both her children are autistic and attend SWLSB schools.<\/p>\n

\u201cI feel a lump in my throat,\u201d she confided, urging the province to consider SWLSB\u2019s breathtaking efficiency.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo one disagrees with the need to develop a recovery plan so that we don\u2019t end up spending more money paying interest to service the province\u2019s debt.\u201d Maccarone acknowledged, \u201cBut our [overhead] is only 3.5 per cent of our budget. A healthy private corporation is considered to be running a really lean operation if its overhead is 10 per cent.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAt 3.5 per cent, we\u2019re building the future leaders of this province,\u201d she concluded. \u201cHelp us to help you.\u201d<\/p>\n
