Liberal Gilles Ouimet again earned strong support from Fabre citizens. As The Suburban <\/i>went to press, he had garnered 30 per cent more votes than his closet rival, Rocque Fran\u00e7ois-Gycelain\u2014the Parti qu\u00e9b\u00e9cois<\/i> candidate trailed a distant second, with just 15 per cent support. <\/p>\n

In an interview with The Suburban<\/i> on election night, Ouimet stated that his first order of business when officially in office will be to resolve Laval\u2019s flood zone debacle. <\/p>\n

\u201cWe cannot wait for the studies to be completed,\u201d he said, \u201cWe need to start working towards a solution immediately.\u201d <\/p>\n

Before the polls closed, election night was particularly stressful, as long lines more 150-people-deep made voting a lengthy process in Fabre riding.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is important when people take the time to vote that they do not get discouraged, as it could affect their participation, not only for this election but for future elections,\u201d Ouimet said.<\/p>\n

Having worked 25 years as a criminal lawyer, politics was new to Ouimet upon his election to represent Fabre riding in the National Assembly in 2012.<\/p>\n

In 1993, he became a federal prosecutor in Qu\u00e9bec and, from 1995 on, headed a team of special prosecutors who investigated fiscal fraud.<\/p>\n

He subsequently served as b\u00e2tonnier<\/i> for the Montreal bar association between 2007-2008 and for Quebec from 2010-2011.<\/p>\n

Ouimet also taught criminal law at both Universit\u00e9 de Montr\u00e9al and McGill.
