www.thesuburban.com<\/a><\/p>\nThis past January, the longtime private English school’s Queen of Angels Academy in Dorval announced that because of chronic low enrollment, the institution would close its doors after the end of this academic year. <\/p>\n
Three years ago, the private schools tried to lower costs and re-market the school that began teaching students in 1888 but with only 186 students attending the school, a significant drop from numbers that hovered around 500, the trend could not have been reversed. <\/p>\n
Last week, the city of Dorval applied a bylaw that would allow residential development that could see condominiums or even single family dwellings built on the land that will be vacated by the academy on its western portion.<\/p>\n
Another option for the large parcel of land in Dorval could be the creation of a new campus opening for classes in 2015. Coll\u00e8ge Sainte Anne de Lachine<\/i> has signed a memorandum of agreement with QAA recently. <\/p>\n
Dominic Varvaro, board of directors chair for QAA noted that both schools were originally founded “by the Sisters of Ste. Anne. We share the same values and mission and are committed to supporting students in their intellectual, spiritual, moral, physical and affective quest for wholeness. We are pleased that as a result of this agreement the QAA campus will be maintained in its current form and that the legacy of our school will be preserved.\u201d<\/p>\n
With the possible residential development and the emergence of a new school on the campus, Varvaro believed that “these two developments ensure that QAA will be able to meet its financial obligations. In fact, the new organization will be assuming all of QAA\u2019s and CSA\u2019s financial obligations.” <\/p>\n
The board chair also thanked Mayor Edgar Rouleau and the city of Dorval council for “support and encouragement” through what has been “a very difficult period.” <\/p>\n
“We are glad that the campus will continue to be a jewel for the city and for the community as a whole,” explained Rouleau. “We also welcome the Coll\u00e8ge Ste. Anne, to our community and look forward to a long and mutually beneficial relationship.\u201d
