On Saturday, May 10, Laval will hold its fifth annual pet adoption day in collaboration with the Companion Animal Adoption Centres of Quebec (CAACQ). A dozen shelters will be on hand to show off their healthy, vaccinated and sterilized furry friends at the Samson arena, 655 Sylvie. <\/p>\n

The average price for pet adoption ranges from $100-$400, depending on the size and breed. <\/p>\n

Technicians will also be on hand to microchip dogs and cats at a cost of $25. The chip is a small, harmless receiver, the size of a grain of rice, which they insert underneath the animal\u2019s skin between the shoulder blades. It is activated by a microchip scanner.<\/p>\n

The scanner is an electronic device that most veterinarians use. It triggers the tiny chip to emit a code that contains information about the animal. This enables and expedites the process of returning lost pets to their owners. <\/p>\n

In addition to shelters, 15 exhibitors will offer various pet services such as pet walking, kennels, education and canine behavior services, veterinarians and groomers. <\/p>\n

One of the exhibitors, The Zen Hostel for animals, has, since March of this year, undertaken responsibility for animal management in the territory of Laval. It will be working in partnership with Urgences animales,<\/i> a non-profit organization that specializes in emergency pet rescue and retrieval.<\/p>\n

Urgences animales<\/i> will also be responsible for the city\u2019s animal patrol service as well as tactical rescue. It said that its primary goal is to encourage municipalities and the provincial government to establish and enforce stronger animal welfare laws. <\/p>\n
