Registration is now open at city hall for Laval\u2019s annual One baby, one tree promotion. Until May 30, families of newborns can claim a free Japanese lilacs or an ivory silk tree to plant. <\/p>\n

Quantities are limited, the city said, so eligible Laval residents have register beforehand. The baby must have been born between June 2013-May 2014. Proof of residency is required, as well as proof of birth (a birth certificate, health-care card or similar document). Those who register will receive their tree at city hall on June 8. <\/p>\n

The city said that trees in urban areas benefit everyone. They help improve air quality, reduce extreme heat in summer months, reduce noise, beautify neighbourhoods and provide natural habitats for birds and other animals involved in the ecological balance. <\/p>\n

Registration can be done online at the city\u2019s website www.laval.ca or by phoning Karine Locas at [450] 978-6888, extension 5249. <\/p>\n

In a similar effort to make toddlers aware of and enjoy reading, Laval-Laurentides-Lanaudi\u00e8re region libraries are also promoting a one child, one book program. Registration is not required but proof of residency and date of birth are again a must. <\/p>\n

Families who subscribe to their local library may receive, upon request, a gift set including a CD of music, a book card and Enfants Qu\u00e9bec<\/i> magazine.
