The Quebec police academy has singled out Laval Police for the excellence of its community policing. <\/p>\n

During a ceremony at \u00c9cole nationale de police du Qu\u00e9bec<\/i> (\u00c9NAP) in Nicolet, Laval\u2019s finest received the 2014 award of excellence for its initiative to prevent fraud against the elderly. <\/p>\n

\u201cWe visited Laval residences during the past year to explain the various schemes that fraudsters have been using,\u201d explained Sgt. Fr\u00e9d\u00e9ric Jean. \u201cFor example, there\u2019s the accident scam. Someone phones and just says \u2018Grandma\u2019 or \u2018Grandpa\u2019. The grandparent replies with their grandchild\u2019s name, saying, for example, \u2018Frank, is that you?\u2019 The scammer say\u2019s \u2018Yes it is\u2019 and the grandparents think that they\u2019re talking to a loved one.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnother scam is for the caller to say that they are in trouble with the police and need $500 or $1,000,\u201d he told The Suburban<\/i> in an interview. The caller usually says \u2018Don\u2019t tell Mom or Dad. I\u2019ll send someone over to pick the money up for me.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cCredit and debit card fraud is also a problem,\u201d Sgt. Jean added. \u201cYou have to be careful when you use them. Often someone next to you will say \u2018Can you give me a hand?\u2019 then steal your card while you\u2019re distracted.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\nPublicity in The Suburban <\/i>last year also helped Laval Police find more victims of a man who had preyed on seniors whose windows he contracted to wash, but never returned to do the work.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere have also been problems with dodgy door-to-door sales of roofing and lawn mowing,\u201d Sgt. Jean said.<\/p>\n

Finally, Laval Police have also worked closely with www.dira-laval.ca<\/a>, an organization that aims to prevent elder abuse.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey help seniors to feel more at ease going to seek police help if their children are violent or are providing improper eldercare for their parents,\u201d Sgt. Jean concluded. <\/p><\/div>\n
