Beaconsfield\u2019s Allyson Prophet was one of two dozen students chosen from Dawson College\u2019s Fine Arts and Illustration and Design departments to participate in the fifteenth annual Artists in Bloom fundraiser.<\/p>\n

The event was held at Dawson College on April 16, through which the Blue Ring Society, the honor society of Dawson students, raise money for a charitable cause. According to Prophet the selection process is one that is quite vigorous, many students want to participate. Only 12 people are selected from each department.<\/p>\n

The artists are set up at an easel with a canvas and paint. They have two hours to complete their masterpiece while the guests mingle and watch art come to life before their eyes. For Prophet, who usually takes painstaking measures to complete her art, this was a chance to try something new.<\/p>\n

\u201cI applied for the chance to participate in the fundraiser because I knew it was something I was not going to find easy,\u201d Prophet told The Suburban<\/i> in an interview, \u201cit would force me to break out of my comfort zone.\u201d <\/p>\n

For the low ticket price of $15, guests ate, drank and enjoyed the art process for two hours, after which time the gavel dropped and CTV television news anchor Paul Karwatsky starts the auction of the paintings. Prices ranged from $100 to $600.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy painting went for $175,\u201d Prophet said. <\/p>\n

The event has raised over $100,000 over the past 15 years. This year Dawson College\u2019s Blue Ring society donated the proceeds of the Artist in Bloom fundraising event to Generations Foundation and the Dawson College Financial Aid Food Bank.
