Researcher calls for Quebec Labour Code changes that let employees disconnect from the workplace

By Murray Sherriffs

Most people taking vacations these days aren’t truly off from work, if they bring their phones with them.

Some experts say that Quebec labour standards should be updated to give employees the right to disconnect.

Technology has made workers reachable 7/24

Geneviève Richard, researcher at the Centre for Interuniversity Research on Globalization and Work at Université de Montréal acknowledges that connectivity can be good, that we can work anywhere, anytime, and that our professional environment can contact us—our colleagues, our bosses, our clients can contact us anywhere, anytime.”

“But that hyperconnectivity can be harmful, because we are never fully off work which can provide a wide array of negative impacts on physical and psychological health and on the quality and quantity of sleep.”

She is pushing for amendments to the labour code.
