The Montreal SPCA is pushing the Quebec government to do away all rules that stop renters from having pets in rental units.
It is citing the number of ex-friends abandoned every year on moving day, claiming that it is troubling and heart-breaking.
The numbers this month are double the norm, but even on a typical day, 20 animals are abandoned.
That number has risen to 70 unwanted animals found in apartments and townhouses and other rental units.
SPCA executive director Sylvie Bourbonnière says that a large majority of Montreal landlords impose major restrictions on pets—some even refusing to rent to residents with pets.
She says that it is very tough on SPCA staff and volunteers.
