The Oka-Hudson Ferry hasn’t been running normally this Summer because of engine and boat problems that has resulted in only one vessel on the water, forcing many to take the long drive around, frustrating thousands of tourists, cyclists and commuters.

Quebec’s nine largest labour unions have filed a complaint with the International Labour Organization against a law introduced by Labour Minister Jean Boulet that aims to improve how unions are run, by making union dues optional and unions to be more accountable via audited financial statements.

The REM is operating normally, following a switch problem that affected service, yesterday morning.

A 23-year-old repeat offending Quebec city motorcyclist has been caught again, this time doing a wheelie after he crashed, sustaining minor injuries, neutering his learner’s permit and garnering a fine of $1,593 and four demerit points for reckless driving, $338 for a non-compliant exhaust system, $572 for no insurance, $187 each for two non-compliant changes made to his bike, $74 for not having the bike’s licence plate properly affixed plus a 30-day suspension of his driver’s permit.

Quebec prosecutors are in a quandary caused by a Supreme Court decision—the Jordan ruling—that puts Canada’s justice system on a strict schedule and see criminal cases dropped because resources have not accompanied the ruling, which sets time limits for criminal trials to ensure that an accused person’s Charter right to be tried within a reasonable timeframe: 18 months in provincial court; 30 months for Superior Court.

The Montreal police hate crimes division is investigating incidents where people have hurled insults and objects at Hasidic Jews in Outremont and Mile-End.

Quebec has banned all open fires in much of the province and limiting access to some forests, to reduce the risk of wildfires in the Abitibi-Témiscamingue, Capitale-Nationale, Côte-Nord, Lanaudière, Laurentides, Mauricie, Nord-du-Québec, Outaouais and Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean regions.
