Coffee contributes to gut-brain health

By Murray Sherriffs

A cup of coffee might be doing you more good than jacking you up in the morning.

Researchers from the University College Cork in Ireland say that it might have a positive impact on our microbiome, improving the health of the gut-brain axis.

Their analyses shows coffee increases the presence of good bacteria (Eggerthella and Cryptobacterium curtum) and is believed to play a role in eliminating unhealthy bacteria and stomach infections.

Even decaffeinated coffee delivered improvements in learning and memory, which may have been the result of components like polyphenols, which provide cognitive benefits.

Author John Cryan says that “…coffee is one of the richest sources of dietary polyphenols, yet most research has focused almost entirely on caffeine.”
