Hasslers hasten ageing and death

He’s older than he looks

By Murray Sherriffs

Difficult people in your life can accelerate ageing and even lead to a premature death so says a study from author Dr. Byungkyu Lee at New York University.

These hasslers can stress out your life and that is a key driver of biological ageing, because “it can cause inflammation, compromise your immune system and raise your risk of cardiovascular disease.“

He says that what is most striking is that negative social ties are linked not just to self-reported stress and mental health, but to molecular measures of biological ageing.

The study is published in journal The Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

It analysed the biological ages and survey data of 2,345 people ranging from 18+ years of age.

The researchers say that the pace of ageing increases by 1.5 per cent—or about nine months of biological ageing—per hassler.

So, if you have hasslers in your life, you are two-and-a-half years older than someone the same age as you with no hasslers.
