Mindfulness helps elderly mental health and stems cognitive decline

Mindfulness, meditation, yoga, tai chi and breathing practices are showing promise in helping some people with mental health and in decline.

Researchers say that such sessions should be kept under an hour, family members should attend, scheduling be flexible and routines clear.

Lead author Isabel Sadowski, a PhD candidate in Counselling Psychology at McGill, says that older adults living with mild cognitive impairment or dementia who experience increased rates of mental health symptoms which are linked to depression, anxiety, loneliness and stress improve when they engage in such activities.
