Does menopause mean weight gain? Yes…but. Research says that the real metabolic shift happens years earlier. Women’s bodies begin processing sugar and carbs less efficiently, while their metabolism slows down at rest in their 30s and 40s. Weight gain around the menopause transition isn’t necessarily inevitable. Using evidence-based strategies and proactive care, women can navigate perimenopause / menopause transition.

Some strategies:

Lift weights. Aim for two to three sessions of resistance or strength training per week to preserve muscle and boost metabolism. Progressive overload works best; gradually increase the weights you use.

Prioritize protein. Eat enough protein with every meal to support muscle, increase satiety and stabilize blood sugar. Aim for 0.55-0.73 grams of protein per pound (1.2-1.6 grams of protein per kilogram) of body weight daily to reduce the risk of age-related muscle loss.

Sleep smart. Sleep hygiene and stress management help regulate cortisol and appetite hormones; 7-8 hours a night.

Ask different questions. Talk to your clinician about body composition and metabolic health, not just weight and preemptively discuss the risks and benefits of menopause hormone therapy.
