A study published in the New England Journal of Medicine is reporting stem cell therapy has restored insulin production in about 10 patients with Type 1 diabetes.
Its authors say this brings society a step closer to the day when these patients will no longer need insulin doses to control their blood sugar.
They claim that “…although eliminating the need for exogenous insulin is desirable, the results of this study demonstrate the clinical benefits of restoring pancreatic islet function, even in the absence of complete elimination of insulin treatment”
