Pointe Claire has turned the tables on road safety this summer. Instead of issuing tickets for driving infractions, its law enforcement officials have taken to the streets to recognize motorists who drive safely.
Last week, city Insp. Réal Carreno and communication intern Olivier Cauchon teamed up with police Const. François Lachapelle to flag down cars on Donegani Avenue that were driving at or below the speed limit.
It’s all part of a summer safety blitz that Pointe Claire launched in May.
“The goal of the campaign is to reward citizens for good driving practice,” Pointe Claire spokeswoman Marie-Pier Paquette-Séguin told The Suburban. “We want to give as many tickets as possible. We also want to show citizens our presence even if no tickets are issued, to encourage slower driving.”
“We also have some police officers patrolling on bicycle throughout Pointe Claire helping us,” she said in an interview. “They promote bicycle safety and show pedestrians the right place to cross the street.
“The campaign has been ongoing since May 20,” added Paquette-Séguin.
