Gilles Vaillancourt appeared in court, April 7, in the wake of accusations of wrongdoing at city hall, two-and-a-half years after police raided city hall, his homes and safety deposit boxes.

Vaillancourt, who resigned as mayor Nov. 9, 2012, is one of three-dozen people whom police have charged for alleged kickback schemes and making illegal political contributions through proxies.

He also faces organized crime, corruption and fraud charges.

Last week court session was the start of a preliminary hearing that will probably go on until at least June.

The trial itself might not begin until after Vaillancourt’s 75th birthday, Jan. 9 2016, and possibly not before 2017.
