Chinatown West

Rumours out of Laval that the Chinese community is looking to invest in a new commercial and residential sector off the island of Montreal seem to be just that.

Initially, Laval was sought out for the new Chinatown but it appears that Vaudreuil-Dorion is also in the running for a commercial project. They are also potentially looking to build up to 1,000 homes for the entrepreneurs and newcomers.

François Wang, a real estate agent working with members of the Chinese community, said that the decision has changed many times over the past months.

According to Wang, potential areas for development also include Brossard and St. Hubert, due to existing Chinese communities in those cities.

For now, Wang said, nothing has been decided; if a good proposal comes up he will present it to those in charge.

Karine Lechasseur with the CLD de Vaudreuil-Soulanges said she and her colleagues have  heard nothing about any proposed towns to build a Chinatown West.

Martin Paré, Vaudreuil-Dorion’s urban planner confirmed that no plans have been submitted to the city. He did mention that he heard similar rumours about a year ago, but nothing since.
