Laval Police have laid four criminal charges against Chomedey daycare owner Mathieu Mastrostefano, alleging that he assaulted two children, aged three and four, and threatened to kill or cause bodily harm to another three-year-old.

Laval court documents say that investigators have accused the 32-year-old Fabreville resident of committing the first assault on Oct. 30, and a second one Nov. 4. In addition he was accused of having committed an assault while carrying a weapon, Nov. 5.

Finally, Mastrostefano, who, according to Quebec government documents has owned the Château Bertinois daycare since 2011, is charged with uttering threats to kill or harm a fourth child, between Sept. 2 and Nov. 24.

After police arrested Mastrostefano, Nov. 26, the court freed him pending a Jan. 14 hearing, on condition that he not visit the daycare and not communicate with children or parents who attend the daycare nor with current or past daycare employees, other than those who are members of his family.

“At this point the investigation is still ongoing and other charges could be laid,” Sgt. Frédéric Jean told The Suburban. “The victims were children who were attending that daycare. It was important for Laval police to intervene quickly to ensure the safety of the other children who attend that daycare.”

To protect the children, police have declined to divulge their identity.
