Kirkland resident and promotional announcer on The Beat 92.5, Claudia Marques, took a bold step last week against society’s image of beauty when she posted a picture of herself next to size 10 Mylas Dalbesio, Calvin Klein’s new plus size model, on Facebook.
“This has to stop. There are children out there that are being brought up believing that a beautiful healthy size 10 woman is considered plus size,” Marques told The Suburban in an interview, “she is a beautiful healthy woman with a beautiful body. That is where I said I am possibly bigger than this woman and I am not saying I am big by any means, but if she is big imagine what the rest of us are.”
For Marques it is one thing if a fashion designer is catering to runway but Calvin Klein is everybody’s brand. Whatever is natural and healthy for a person should be what we should aim for.
Having struggled with anorexia earlier in her life Marques recognizes the struggle to be comfortable in her skin. Though she feels she has a handle on her eating disorder it is something she manages every day.
“I want society to stop perpetuating the false image of beauty. The picture I posted on Facebook was to show that I am not perfect but I am perfect with my imperfections. I gave birth with this body. It is the home for my soul and I need to embrace that. There should not be one set image for what is beautiful; beauty comes in all shapes and sizes.”
Marques suggest the best way to change society’s perception is to start small, with our own inner circle of people.
“If we teach our children that beauty comes from within and all people are beautiful in their own way, then they will eventually pay it forward.”
Claudia Marques celebrates her good fortune in life by giving back to the community as spokesperson and volunteer for Anorexia and Bulimia Quebec. She also volunteers at Moisson Montreal, where she lends her voice to those in need.
