Dorval Royal Canadian Legion Branch 245) welcomed 52 players, of all skill levels for the 16th annual John Harmidy Dart Classic, Nov. 15, in support of the West Island Crusade Against Cancer (WICAC).

John Harmidy, a Pointe Claire resident, and dart enthusiast, wanted to remember his father, who succumbed to cancer in March 1999, in a positive and lasting impression.

“My dad was a really good dart player and a 30-year Legion member. It made sense to combine his two passions in life,” Harmidy told The Suburban.

The legion was happy to help out one of its fallen associates in welcoming this event. The day offered Dagwood’s sandwiches, door prizes, half and half tickets, as well as a West Jet raffle.

Dorval resident, and legion member, Sue Martel was the beneficiary of the two open tickets to anywhere West Jet flies.

“I was absolutely thrilled to receive such a wonderful gift. I really didn’t expect to win and bought the ticket because it was for an excellent cause,” said Martel.

WICAC is a registered non profit charity organization dedicated to helping provide annual donations to NOVA West Island’s Camp Carousel program, the West Island Palliative Care Center and the Canadian Cancer Society through sporting and cultural fundraising events.

Camp Carousel is geared towards youth and children who participate in recreational activities, arts and crafts, campfires, small group sessions on grief work and a remembrance ceremony under the guidance of a skilled counsellor and specially trained volunteers.

The West Island Palliative Care residence, with its 23 bed facility since expanding in 2011, is the largest freestanding community based palliative care residence in Canada. It has cared for more then 2,200 patients since opening in 2002.

At press time, the final amount raised had yet to be determined.
