Vaudreuil-Soulanges SPCA a no-kill shelter

“We are not supported by government and without the community, we don’t exist”

With the continued growth in Vaudreuil-Soulanges of young families and those wishing to downsize and enjoy condo living, there has been an increase in pets and so in the SPCA came in to fill a need.

Within less than a year, the no-kill shelter opened its doors last February, there have already been over a 1,000 pet surrenders.

“That is a large amount and we can only imagine what the numbers will be once more people know about us,” Director General Rémi Brazeau told The Suburban. “We have opened to fill a need.”

Priding themselves on finding permanent homes for their four legged transient residents, the Vaudreuil SPCA is a no-kill shelter.

“We only believe that euthanasia should be used when an animal is odd, infirm or injured beyond repair. To get rid of animals simply to save space is not euthanasia, but just killing and we do not do that here,” said Brazeau.

The director general suggested that anyone thinking of giving a pet for a gift is a mistake because “an animal will become a lifetime commitment as it becomes part of the family and so the decision must be made that the animal will be part of your life and not just a toy that can be gotten rid of if it eats the furniture or pees on the rug.”

Part of the problem with illegal breeders and puppy mills that can be found throughout the province is that “the government still sees animals and pets as property and not a living thing.”

Another misconception Brazeau and his colleagues ahve to deal with is that the SPCA is a government funded agency where in fact “we give money to the government through taxes. Without the community, we don’t exist.”

Brazeau’s advice to would be pet owners is to “never buy an animal from a unlicensed breeder as that can encourage mills. Also, make sure your pets are spayed or neutered, something we do for every animal seeking a permanent home.”

The Vaudreuil-Soulanges SPCA can be found at 3858 Cite des Jeunes, Vaudreuil. The phone number is [514] 566.5678 and it can be found on Facebook at SPCA Ouest de l’île.
