Laval dog lovers will be getting three more spots where their pets can roam free.

The city has confirmed that plans to develop three new dog runs at Berthiaume-Tremblay Park (Chomedey), Lisane Street (Fabreville) and Horizon Jeunesse Park (Auteuil) will move forward this summer.

The new canine parks will include separate sections for small and large dogs, to reduce aggression by smaller pets who feel intimidated.

The city’s announcement that it will move forward with the $645,000 project came with a reminder to dog-run users to show respect for fellow citizens and their animals, in order to “encourage a positive experience for all citizens.”

Laval has already invested $900,000 to construct its six existing dog runs at Binet, Laval West, Lausanne, Rossignol, Corbusier and Pie IX parks, and budgets about $7,000 over a five-year period to maintain them.

To promote salubrity and reduce wear and tear on turf, the new grounds will be covered in gravel dust, rather than the grass that the city has hitherto used.

2015 upgrade plans

In addition to the three new dog runs that will be developed this year, Laval announced similar plans to retrofit three of its six existing canine romps next year to the new standard: the Rossignol dog run (Ste. Rose), Lausanne Park (Vimont) and at the St. Antoine section of Western Laval Park.

The dog runs close each night to protect adjacent residents from the possibility of being disturbed by barking or other noise. Citizens who want to find out opening hours for their favourite dog run can get the information on the city’s website www.laval.ca

The French-only information on dog runs can be found by searching the site for the keyword ‘chiens’.
