Akwasi Yeboah has been chairperson of the West Island Black Community Association for about a year now, having served as vice-chair, financial and educational coordinator for the non-profit organization that has ben serving its community diligently more many years.

The dynamic and eloquent head of the WIBCA started out a decade ago as a tutor in the agency’s after-school and Saturday homework help sessions to help students in math and science, courses Yeboah had excelled in before moving on to a more business focused curriculum in university.

After getting experience under his belt as chairperson, Yeboah told The Suburban that this year’s goal is to implement even more programs, specifically towards the youth. Yeboah has already reached out to students at Riverdale High School, visiting them every Wednesday to gauge their concerns and interests.

“By building a relationship with our youth, we can get them more passionate about the organization as they are the tutors and leaders of tomorrow,” Yeboah said.

The Youth Work integration program is a newer concept for the association this year but has proved fruitful, partnering high school, college and university graduates seeking work experience with a company in an internship capacity for a three month stage. The ideal goal is for “the students taking part getting a job posting,” Yeboah said.

In order to facilitate more programs at WIBCA, renovations totaling $100,000 will be required. “We were able to raise $12,000 to do some previous renovations but these major renovations will provide more space for newer programs,” the chairperson said.
