The Société de transport de Laval (STL) has put operation smog alert into effect for the summer, allowing riders to travel for a reduced rate on smog days.
As of June 1 until labor day, when environment Canada announces a smog alert the STL will reduce the regular rate of travel from $3.25 to $1 across the bus network.
The rate reduction will be communicated by media, electronic signs across the city of Laval, as well as various message signs put up by Quebec’s ministry of transport, which are located along major highways in the region.
The purpose of this initiative is to encourage the use of public transit in an effort to reduce the number of cars in circulation, which are largely responsible for air pollution.
The initiative is expected to reduce car travel by 1,500 cars per day.
