For the first time ever, Provigo Le Marché located at 4849 St. Jean Blvd. in Pierrefonds is allowing an allergy free cooking class for kids six to 12-years-old to be held on Sunday, June 22. Founder of Delicious Without Gluten, Miriam Pearl, will be teaching the class.

“I am so excited to be a part of this initiative. Parents are so excited that someone is finally doing this,” Pearl explained in an interview with The Suburban, “we want to reach many families who have kids that would love to participate. Having food allergies can be isolating.”

According to Pearl there are 15 kids already signed up and she is expecting more. She will split the group into two classes if the numbers demand it. The menu for the day will be pizza, fruit smoothies and chocolate chip cookies. The class will be given again on Aug. 24, with a new menu.

Delicious Without Gluten (DWG) is a Dollard des Ormeaux based baked-goods company, which is gluten-free, peanut-free, nut-free and dairy-free. According to Pearl, the goal of the company is to make foods that are inclusive to all kids so that no child is ever made to feel different or left out because of a common food allergy.

“My cupcakes have been to countless birthday parties,” Pearl said, “nobody even knows they are gluten free.”

Pearl has two kids with allergies and celiac disease and is empathetic to the fast growing number of kids who have food intolerances or other issues that segregate them from their peers. About 300,000 Canadian children under 18 years have food allergies. Peanut allergy in Canada affects about two in 100 children.

After realizing that her first child had a severe peanut allergy, Miriam opened a kosher peanut-free bakery. There she learned how to develop recipes and create tasty treats in a commercial setting. After two years in business, both of Miriam’s children were diagnosed with celiac disease. Out of necessity, she went back to the kitchen “drawing board” to learn how to bake and cook gluten-free, which is how DWG was born.

DWG quickly took off from private orders and catering to filling shelves in local health food stores. Today DWG has a gluten free certified factory making her cupcakes, muffins and pita bread to meet the growing demand.
