When Strangers in the Night founder Larry Day launched the first event bringing together good food and live music 10 years ago, 400 people attended and 10 restaurants took part. Now, it has become a premiere event for the West Island with more than 5,000 partygoers and 80 eateries taking part in this year’s event.
Besides bringing the live shows that have seen Blue Rodeo, Kool and the Gang and KC and The Sunshine Band take the stage over the years, Day’s much attended kick off to summer party has raised more than $2 million for the Starlight Children’s Foundation.
At the inaugural event, Boogie Wonder Band were the featured act and will perform again this year. The headliner will be three time Grammy winning artists The Pointer Sisters who will be belting out such hits as Jump and I’m so Excited. Nineties dance diva Crystal Watters will also be performing as well as Montreal singer Sammie Libman.
“Another one of our discovers this year is a 10-year-old singer that is going to blow people away as well as another surprise guest who will be announced on the night of the show,” Day told The Suburban.
Besides the array of food and beverage choices from an array of Montreal restaurants, there will also be a martini lounge as well as the very popular cognac and cigar bar.
Day, who is also a DJ, club owner and working actor, is modest about the event’s growth over the years and would not take the credit, instead saying “I just want to thank all of the people who come out and support us year after year while making a difference for the lives of kids who need help.”
Due to the success of the one night party and fundraiser, Day might be taking the show on the road to expand to other Canadian cities such as Ottawa and Toronto.
The 10th annual Strangers in the Night Gourmet Gala takes place Saturday, June 14 located in the Fairview Parking lot in Pointe Claire, beginning at 5 p.m.
