At a recent meeting in Vaudreuil-Dorion, the 35 municipalities of the off and West Island have been formed under the official legal title of Regroupement des municipalités de l’ouest, an entity that now comprises more than 1,200 square kilometres and almost half a million residents.
The new legal entity will be able to deal with provincial and federal governments with a common and united front for such dossiers such as infrastructure, public transportation and health care.
Baie d’Urfe Mayor Maria Tutino was named vice-president of the body and Très Saint Rédempteur Mayor Jean Lalonde as president.
“There is a strong complementarity between the Vaudreuil-Soulanges MRC and Montreal’s West Island on many issues including transportation, public transportation, the Train de l’ouest, economic development, health, culture, tourism, cycling paths and the St. Lawrence River’s water level,” Lalonde explained.
“The renewal of our municipalities’ collaboration regarding strategic policy concerns show that together, the West-Island and Vaudreuil-Soulanges are a united front that cannot be ignored” noted Tutino.
