Boston Pizza is expected to have raised more than $5,000 across Canada for Big Brothers and Big Sisters as it wrapped up its Valentine’s promotion last week.
This year Boston Pizza Centropolis Laval donated $1 for each of the more than 250 heart-shaped pizzas that it sold on Valentine’s Day.
Boston Pizza Centropolis marketing coordinator Kathleen Francœur told The Suburban that the marketing proceeds would be channeled through Boston Pizza’s Future Prospects Foundation to Big Brothers and Big Sisters (BBBS).
BBBS is a non-profit organization that benefits children across Canada.
“The cause of mentoring and role-modeling is of growing concern in Canada, and collective action is needed to ensure the more than one million Canadian children receive the support and guidance they need” said Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Canada president Bruce MacDonald.
The BBBS objective was to match a mentor to a “little”: a child who generally—though not always—hails from a one-parent family. The idea is to fill a void left by the absent parent. The mentor meets with the child twice a month and makes at least one phone call in between visits. Those visits consist of activities outside the home, such as skating, taking in a soccer match, a movie, for example.
Once the “little” reaches the age of 18 the relationship to BBBS is terminated, though more often than not the bond that has been forged remains for life.
Boston Pizza Foundation Future Prospects has committed to supporting Big Brothers and Big Sisters (BBBS) to the tune of $1.5 million over five years. Boston Pizza co-owners and chairmen Jim Treliving and George Melville said that they investment as part of their long-term commitment to mentorship and the community.
