West Island Community Shares has a number of ways to collect money every year for the 36 non-profit government agencies it helps out every year in its annual fundraising campaign. Wine tasting events, spaghetti dinners and charity breakfasts and even executive director Caroline Tison taking part in a marathon day of golf are just some of the events that take place in order to raise more than a million dollars for the one in five West Island residents who will need to avail themselves of the services provided by the NGOs.

Never wanting to stand still, WICS will be taking part in a new fundraiser this year, the 2014 Scotiabank Charity Challenge half-marathon or 5 km run taking place in the spring at Parc Jean Drapeau.

WICS is hoping to raise $25,000 for the one day event on Sunday, April 27. Interested participants are being asked to run with WICS or create a team comprised of family, friends or colleagues and be part of the more than 6,000 altruistic athletes who run for charity.

Businesses who take part are encouraged to wear their branded merchandise to build team spirit and inter-departmental races for bragging rights are a fun suggestion too.

The $25,000 raised will go towards WICS’ annual campaign that has raised almost $9 million since it began and gave more than $1 million to the 36 social agen- cies last year alone.

Currently, the event is more than half full and is expected to be full by March. To take part or to simply pledge other runners, go online at www.canadarunningseries.com/monthalf_en/charity/wics.htm
