Following the devastating Typhoon Haiyan that struck the Philippines this past November, more than 6,000 lives were lost and almost four million citizens were displaced from their homes or lost them entirely to the storm’s wrath.
As a way to help those affected and the many Canadians of with family in the Philippines, some students and alumni at St. George’s school decided to put together a talent show to raise money to donate to the Red Cross to ensure the funds go towards those suffering from the storm.
“We’ve all been through some sort of pain just like in the Philippine and I felt that we portrayed that pain, their sadness, but most of all hope,” said Grade 9 student Julie Fournier, who sang two songs at the fundraiser held at the school recently.
The student performers attracted 200 attendees and made $500 for the evening.
Fournier, who likes to sing in public and has donated her talents singing at seniors’ homes in the area, wanted to use her talents to “try and help people who have lost everything.”
The student based show was very inclusive, highlighting one of the student’s dancing skills although he is almost blind and his performance was the show’s climax.
“We all had some good laughs and just appreciated each other and what we are fortunate enough to have,” Fournier told The Suburban. “It is important to use your gifts to make the world a better place as every little step helps. Every step we make, we can make a difference.”
