While the outpouring of praise from world leaders and citizens alike for the great example left by Nelson Mandela in personifying hope over revenge, Elizabeth-Ann Williams has a slightly different view on all of the tributes paid to the former South African president and international peace icon.
The vice-chair of the West Island Black Community Association believes that all of the accolades bestowed on Mandela are worthy, but she is bothered “that none of the world leaders have emulated his actions of forgiveness and reconciliation, only praising his words.”
Williams cited the recent acrimony facing the U.S. political system embroiled in a two party system seeing bent on in-fighting over service to its citizens, the ongoing conflicts in the Middle east and “in our own backyard, the Parti québécois seem to be bent on revenge from events that happened years ago.
“Premier Pauline Marois has been praising Nelson Mandela for his actions while she is trying to oppress her own people with the PQ’s Charter of Values,” Williams told The Suburban.
“If world leaders really want to pay tribute to Mandela, their actions belies what they are saying and need to put his words into concrete action,” Williams said.
