To celebrate its five years of offering fair trade and environment saving products, the Coopérative du Grand Orme in Ste. Anne de Bellevue officially opened in its new location, the Simon Fraser House that was constructed in 1792.

Mayor Paola Hawa cut the ceremonial ribbon, marking the new co-op’s home. “This is a perfect location for the co-op because the early explorers who built the Simon Fraser House were different from the norm and wanted to start a new, better way of life which also represents the character and spirit of Ste. Anne de Bellevue,” Hawa told the assembled.

“The future of the co-op also reflects the past as the explorers had a spiritual belief in living in an equitable society and we will value the heritage of the fur trade to fair trade,” said Hawa.

Historians conclude that fur trader Peter Grant built the house 221 years ago who worked with the North West Company. Fraser was known to have lived in the house until his death in 1839. Another notable guest was Thomas Moore, a 19th-century Irish poet who penned the poem A Canadian Boat Song while in residence at the house.

The co-op’s future will include a cafe and grocery store with plans to bring in a lunch menu and juice bar.
