Michel Gibson, who served as district one councilor for the last 22 years, beat incumbent Mayor John Meaney by 321 votes and the new district one councilor replacing Gibson is Michael Brown who defeated city of Kirkland’s former director of sports and recreation, Neil Semenchuk in a close race by only 15 votes, winning 500-485.

Four of the sitting councilors, district two’s Luciano Piciacchia, district three’s Tony Di Gennaro, district six’s John Morson and Paul Dufort of district seven were not challenged in the last election for their positions, being acclaimed.

Longtime councilor for district five, Brian Swinburne, easily beat challenger Maxime Savard with 75% of total votes cast.

The most contested race in the city was in district four where five candidates vied for the council seat but while voters opted to go for a new mayor, they chose stability in their council members with incumbent Domenico Zito winning with almost 45 per cent of eligible ballots.
