Blue Water Seafoods plant set to close

The Blue Water Seafoods plant in Lachine announced last week that due to the company’s global vision, the plant will cease operations as of June 2014.

The company stated that it plans, along with its sister company Gorton’s, are to consolidate its North American manufacturing of frozen fish and seafood products. The Lachine plant’s work will be absorbed by Gorton’s Gloucester, Massachusetts plant currently in operation.

The Lachine plant currently employs 124 workers, many who have been at the plant for upwards of 20 years, and regrets the impact that the plant’s eventual closing next summer will have on its employees.

Blue Water Seafoods hopes that its employees, knowing the plant’s end date, will be able to transition to work elsewhere in the industry and that the reason to close had nothing to do with their work output but rather the need to become more efficient in today’s global market.
