Last Thursday, after reinforcing security measures around the offices of Reliance Power Equipment, the illegally stored PCBs that have been on the property for years were being removed from the work site.

Sanexen, a Brossard based company which specializes in hazardous and contaminated work site rejuvenation, was hired by Quebec’s Environment Ministry and had agreed to get the illegally stored material off the site within 10 days; a decision that has “satisfied” Pointe Claire Mayor Bill McMurchie who stated via press communique.

“We have cooperated with the Ministry to make sure that the site is made safe as quickly as possible,” McMurchie noted. “The Municipal Council’s elected officials and I are all the more satisfied with this announcement because our priority has been from the outset to ensure the health and safety of our residents.”

The collected PCBs will be shipped to Swan Hills, Alberta to be stored at facility, the only of its kind, accredited to safely store the hazardous waste.

“As we jointly announced earlier, the PCBs will be removed from the Reliance site, and this will reduce the potential hazards on this illegal storage site,” said McMurchie, referring to a press conference held with Environment Minister Yves-François Blanchet, Sept. 17, at the contaminated site. “As the Minister promised, soil decontamination will be completed in the next few months, to our great satisfaction.”

The ministry’s next phase, once the materials have been removed, will be to seek the right firm through the tender process the contract of decontaminating the affected soil.

To further secure the work place, motion detector lights were installed and repairs were made to the fence, including the installation of barbed wire.
