Police reassure Ste. Dorothée residents after Rizzuto return

Laval police have been unusually forthcoming in setting jittery Ste. Dorothée residents at ease, after news emerged last week that Vito Rizzuto had recently settled in the Laval district.

Rizzuto had hitherto been imprisoned in Colorado for five years, after an American court found him guilty of being at the scene of a series of 1981 murders.

His father, Nicolo Rizzuto, was assassinated inside his Cartierville home by a sniper in 2010, less than a year after his son was killed in Montreal’s West End district.

The head of the Laval Police public affairs department, Lt. Daniel Guérin, took time off from his vacation to tell The Suburban that neighbours in the vicinity of Vito Rizzuto’s new home adjacent to the Islesmere golf course need not be concerned by allegations of his involvement with organized crime.

“We are very confident that our investigators and our criminal intelligence branch will manage the situation very professionally,” he reassured in an interview.

“It’s a very capable team, which has been monitoring the situation since last year, and we have already managed other organized-crime risks in Laval very effectively in years past,” he explained.

“Nothing has happened to any neighbours,” Lt. Guérin added, but “if people feel unsafe, they can come to see us at the police station and we will explain how we will work in the neighbourhood, so that they can better understand the Laval Police strategy.”

He said that the police service will be a forthcoming as possible, whilst being careful not to give out information that could compromise potential future investigations.
