The city of Laval and the Société de transport de Laval (STL) are working together to encourage citizens to change their travel habits and take advantage of public transit on Friday, September 20, as part of their Carless Friday event.Laval will again be participating in Carless Friday together more than 2,150 cities around the world.

The theme of the event will be Park(ing) Day where parking spaces will be transformed into works of art. Over 20 organizations and institutions will be modifying their parking spots, turning them into parks and recreational spaces

Also, the Claude-Léveillée and Jacques Tétreault area, between de l’Avenir and Lucien-Paiement will be closed to regular traffic between noon-6 p.m. so that the space can be used for activities to take place.

Laval residents re being given the chance to see the solar-powered car being built for the École Polytechnique de Montréal’s Esteban Project. In addition to a tour of the new STL electric buses, users will also be given a special one dollar rate for the STL’s entire network of buses.

“This year, we predict a four per cent increase in riders” STL Chief Executive Officer, Guy Picard said in a statement.

“Events like the one on Sept. 20 are an excellent way to encourage the public to change their commuting habits and gives them a chance to take the bus at a reduced fare.”

“We want to motivate people to reappropriate their streets and create a space where active and public transit is encouraged,” added Mayor Martine Beaugrand.

“It’s a great way to encourage people to take action and help them to rethink the way they travel and choose healthy and greener alternatives.”
