Pointe Claire’s Mayor Bill McMurchie has outlined additional measures which should be put in place to secure the site owned by Reliance where polychlorinated biphenyl-contaminated oil was discovered.

According to a statement issued last Wednesday by the mayor’s office, the security at the site remained flawed and there were four improvements suggested.
In a letter sent to Environment Minister Yves-François Blanchet, McMurchie recommended an increase in police presence, a firefighting emergency response team to remain directly on the site, installation of an anti-intrusion fence, and access control measures to identify individuals accessing the building.
These extra measures were requested following a public recognition that the measures previously put in place did not go far enough.
As the mayor explained “Individuals from our community witnessed, that despite police presence, the site remained accessible. We therefore asked that the site be hermetically sealed, to use police terms.”

In an interview with The Suburban, a spokesman for the mayor’s office confirmed that the ministry have so far complied with their requests to increase police presence. In his statement, the mayor confirmed that these measures “will be sufficient to ensure the health and safety of the citizens of Pointe Claire until the PCB removal”.
The Ministère du Développement Durable, de l’Environnement, de la Faune et des Parcs has given Reliance until September 28 to install fire- and intrusion-detection systems and to drain all containers of PCB contaminated oil.
