Dog-lovers should take note that this coming Sunday, Sept. 15, a Dog-o-thon is taking place hosted by the Canine Family of Lachine who will be raising money for a dog and cat spay and neuter program for the borough.

The event will fittingly start at the borough’s membership dog park located at 28th Ave. and Victoria and will begin at 11 a.m. The Suburban spoke to Shari Harrison, the president of the Canine Family of Lachine association.

“Before we got the park, there were zero places to take your dogs,” Harrison said. With a need for owners to take their dogs where they could interact with other canines off leash, Harrison noted that “protesting didn’t work so we held parties” to raise awareness about the need for a park.

The original space had a short fence but was “mostly gravel and there was a burr tree. Now, it is a lot more dog-friendly with a water fountain for dogs and agility course,” Harrison said.

Participants are asked to contribute two dollars each to take part in order to raise funds for a spay and neuter program for dogs and cats in the borough by a Lachine veterinarian. The Canine Family of Lachine will also be selling dog centric calendars for $15 each.

The 90-odd members of the park pay a yearly membership fee for admittance to the canine friendly area.

The borough has provided the walkers and dogs with benches and a tent and participants are encouraged to bring their own picnic lunches following the walk.
