Last week, Pointe Claire District 8 councillor Morris Trudeau announced that he would be running for mayor in the upcoming November municipal election.

Jack Beaumont, who was born and raised in Pointe Claire and has volunteered for numerous sporting and non-profit agencies in the community, has declared his intention to run for the now-vacant council seat where he lives.

Beaumont has lived in Pointe Claire since 1946, has raised three children and now has seven grandchildren. He worked for 37 years at the GM plant in Pointe Claire. The community minded Beaumont has been on the Lakeside Heights Recreation Association and was on the city’s original Hockey Board, well before Pointe Claire had any indoor rinks.

He is still active in the Pointe Claire Oldtimers Hockey Club and recently helped with the Special Olympics that took place in Pointe Claire this past July. He sells poppies for the Royal Canadian Legion, works with seniors for the city’s Aid for Seniors Inc. and was chosen to be part of the city’s demerger committee.

Beaumont has been impressed with the way Pointe Claire has been running the city efficiently and hopes to “maintain the quality of life, fair tax base and to continue with the transparency and good governing of past councils and mayors.

“I had been asked to run in the past but never had time but, now that the seat is open, I have thought that now is the time,” Beaumont told The Suburban.

Beaumont is preparing his nomination papers as well as getting the requisite signatures from citizens to run and does not expect to be acclaimed but “I expect competition, which is very good for democracy.”

Beaumont’s parents were very civic minded and taught him at an early age that if someone asks you to volunteer “then you can either say yes or no. But my father told me that if you say yes, then do your best.”

While he campaigns for the District 8 council seat, Beaumont intends to keep volunteering with seniors, as he has checked with the city and there is no conflict of interest while he runs for office.
